The science

How it works

Melanocortin receptors in the brain
Bremelanotide activates melanocortin receptors, mainly MC4R, in the hypothalamic regions that govern sexual desire.
Dopamine in the arousal center
That signaling raises dopamine in the medial preoptic area, which is the arousal signal itself rather than a downstream effect.
Not a blood-flow medication
Viagra-type drugs act on PDE5 and blood vessels. PT-141 acts upstream in the brain, which is why it can help when desire, not mechanics, is the problem.
Taken as needed
Dosed 45 minutes to 2 hours before activity rather than daily, with limits on how often it can be used.

The FDA approval rests on two large randomized trials in women. Evidence in men comes from smaller studies.

A note from Dr. Wright

Desire is one of the hardest things for patients to bring up. PT-141 treats it directly rather than working around it, and we start small so the first experience is a good one.
