How BPC-157 Works: The Peptide That Helps Your Body Rebuild

A surgeon explains how BPC-157 helps tendons, ligaments, muscle, and the gut repair: new blood supply, repair cells, and a stronger healing signal.

By Jason D. Wright, D.O., physician and founder of Love My Peptides

I have spent more than a decade in the operating room, and one thing never changes: some tissue heals fast, and some barely heals at all. Skin knits together in days. A tendon or ligament can take months, and sometimes never fully recovers. The difference comes down to blood supply, and it is exactly where BPC-157 gets interesting.

Why some injuries just won’t heal

Healing is a delivery problem. Repair cells, oxygen, and nutrients all arrive through blood vessels. Muscle is packed with them, so muscle heals well. Tendons and ligaments have very few, which is why a nagging Achilles, a tennis elbow, or a partially torn ligament can hang around for a year.

Rest helps. Physical therapy helps. But if the tissue cannot get what it needs to rebuild, progress stalls. BPC-157 works on that bottleneck.

What BPC-157 is

BPC stands for “Body Protection Compound.” It is a short chain of 15 amino acids, based on a protective protein your own stomach makes. That origin matters: it is unusually stable, tough enough to survive stomach acid, which is why it can be taken as a capsule for the gut or as an injection for the rest of the body.

How it works: four ways it helps tissue repair

1. It builds new supply lines

BPC-157 switches on the signals that grow new blood vessels (angiogenesis). More vessels into an injured tendon or ligament means more oxygen, more nutrients, and more repair cells reaching the spot that needs them. For poorly supplied tissue, that is the whole game.

2. It calls in the repair crew

Fibroblasts are the cells that lay down new collagen, the building material of tendons, ligaments, and scar tissue. BPC-157 helps these cells move into the injured area and spread out faster, so rebuilding starts sooner.

3. It turns up the healing signal

Tendon cells treated with BPC-157 make more receptors for growth hormone. Think of it as turning up the volume: the same healing signals your body already sends get a stronger response.

4. It protects and repairs the gut lining

Because it comes from a stomach protein, BPC-157 has a strong effect on the lining of the digestive tract. It helps protect the lining and supports its repair, which is why the capsule form is used for gut irritation and inflammation.

What people use it for

What to expect

Most people describe gradual change rather than a switch flipping: less pain with activity, easier movement, fewer bad days. Changes usually show up over two to four weeks. A typical course runs four to six weeks, then a break.

One thing I tell every patient: BPC-157 helps the tissue rebuild, but training is what makes the new tissue strong. Keep up your rehab. The combination is what gets you back to what you love doing.

Better together

Injection or capsule?

For tendons, ligaments, and muscle, a small injection under the skin is the standard. For the gut, the capsule delivers BPC-157 right where it is needed. At your visit, we choose based on what you are treating.

What the science says

Most BPC-157 research comes from lab and animal studies, where the results on tendons, ligaments, muscle, and the gut have been consistently impressive. Human studies are still early and small, and BPC-157 is not FDA-approved. That is why I prescribe it after a real evaluation, in defined courses, with follow-up to make sure it is helping.
